R22 is a powerful greenhouse gas, which was commonly used as a refrigerant in systems manufactured before the early 2000’s. It has a detrimental effect on the ozone layer.
On 1st January 2015 it became illegal to use R22 refrigerant gas to service, maintain or repair air conditioning and refrigeration equipment. This was part of the Government’s initiative to reduce the use of ozone depleting substances and greenhouse gases, both residentially and commercially.
It means that if your system runs on R22 gas, it becomes effectively unserviceable and irreparable once it breaks down.
Find Out If Your System Runs On R22
Check the label on the outdoor component, which usually states the gas used.
The Options
Maintain Existing System
Many businesses still use older R22 air conditioning systems, especially offices, the food and drink industry, health and retail. If your system is running on R22 gas, your biggest headache is that refrigeration and air conditioning is critical to operations and productivity, but replacement is costly.
If your air conditioning system runs on R22 refrigerant, there is no need to panic. If the system is working well and there are no suspected leaks, then you can continue to use your air conditioning system as normal. By continuing to use your existing R22 air conditioning system you have no immediate costs and no immediate disruption.
If you are using an old R22 air conditioning system the it is recommended that you have the unit regularly serviced and checked for leaks.
However there are risks associated with this. These systems are quite old and therefore at risk of component failure and breakdown, especially if they are used regularly through-out the year or are not serviced regularly. If there is an issue with your air conditioning system, it could be un-economical to repair or even illegal.
Some components, such as the main power circuit board (PCB) can be costly to replace. If the system contains R22 this means it is quite old, therefore making parts difficult to source and expensive to buy. If there is a suspected leak on the system or if the compressor has failed, an R22 system cannot legally be repaired. These types of problems re-quire the system to be de-gassed and, as R22 is no longer able to be purchased, the system cannot be repaired.
Whilst it may feel like you are avoiding disruption and reducing costs by not having your R22 system replaced, you could actually be making matters worse.
Replace System
A new system gives peace of mind, a long-term solution for efficient performance and can be maintained for years to come. All R22 systems will need replacing eventually.
Can you cover the associated downtime your business will face should the cooling/heating system unexpectedly break down and need replacing? Can you afford to continue paying those high energy bills?
Replacing your old R22 system with an advanced system such as The Ingenious Air® Small Duct System creates your perfect indoor climate.
Due to its clever design, The Ingenious Air® System can be installed area by area. This keeps disruption to a minimum and allows your business to continue as usual. A planned installation causes far less downtime and disruption than that which results from an unexpected breakdown. How long would it take for a replacement system to be specified, quoted for, agreed and eventually installed – especially in summer when air conditioning installers are in incredibly high demand?
A planned installation ensures you choose the best system for your business, rather than make a rushed decision which may not deliver. A planned installation ensures you have looked thoroughly into costings, lease finance options and any grants available so you get the best deal for your business.
The Ingenious Air® System can save you up to 40% on energy bills, compared with your old R22 system. Not only can this help you reduce operating costs but also the initial cost of installation. The Ingenious Air®System uses multiple, sustainable, leading edge technologies and carries a low carbon footprint. As a result, by installing the system with an energy efficient heat pump, you may qualify for funding and grants.
