The possible introduction of new indoor air quality (IAQ) planning laws, were discussed at a recent BESA conference.
London’s deputy mayor Shirley Rodrigues said “IAQ is now a priority consideration in the city’s review of planning laws and a crucial part of its Environment Strategy”.
Over the past few years the government have been implementing measures to clean up the countries outside air pollution. In addition to this, they are also now recognising the importance of good indoor air quality. Air pollution effects individuals, businesses and the NHS. So, the introduction of a new air quality planning law would help to greatly reduce health implications for individuals as well as the consequent strain on businesses and the NHS.
Our previous post, The Cost of Poor Air Quality, explored the implications for businesses as a result of indoor air pollution. These included:
- Increased sick leave
- Reduced staff concentration
- And as a result increase cost of absence.
Currently, one of the main focuses when constructing new buildings is usually energy efficiency. However, a new air quality planning law could result in this shifting to an increased focus on IAQ. This means that consultants, architects and designers will need to find a balance between energy efficiency and air quality.
During the BESA conference, actions to help implement this new strategy were also discussed. Suggestions included a focus on the importance of appropriate filtration technology.
Improving Air Quality
The Ingenious Air® System can significantly improve IAQ as well as improve energy efficiency. The High specification air purification module combines three powerful filtration technologies (high grade F7 filter, UV light filtration and PRO Cell technology) to remove all types of serious airborne indoor pollutants:
- Disease-causing viruses and bacteria
- Allergens (e.g. hay fever and asthma) and dust
- Harmful volatile organic compounds, pollutants and odours
The unit is also compatible with sustainable and efficient energy sources such as heat pumps. The unit also has many green credentials, which can reduce your carbon footprint.
