Reduce Microbial Resistance by Preventing Infection

You are here: Home / Infection Prevention and Control / Reduce Microbial Resistance by Preventing Infection
Today’s Sky News headline is ‘Overuse of antibiotics risks medicine going back to the dark ages.’
Health officials are warning people not to take antibiotics unless they need them. This follows a rise in drug-resistant infections, which risks putting medicine “back in the dark ages”.

Although reducing antibiotic use is vital, infection prevention is a far more effective course of action.

Prevention of infection in a healthcare facility is not just about killing pathogens in acute patient care areas.  It starts the moment anyone – and anything – enters the building:  This includes every patient, every visitor, every staff member and every contract worker. It includes every item of equipment (medical or otherwise), every cubic metre of ventilation and every consumable and container.

Pathogen transference happens everywhere: in waiting rooms, on reception desks, in corridors, on floors, toilets, privacy screens, door handles and infected patients. It happens via touch and via the air. There is no escape. Pathogen transference must therefore be drastically reduced throughout the whole facility.

Until now, the solution has been total biocide of all bacteria along with viruses. But killing 99.9% of the bacteria only accelerates the growing and frightening problem of anti-microbial resistance:

The vast majority of bacteria are not pathogens; they are a non-threatening and even health-enhancing requirement for human life. Indiscriminately destroying all bacteria destroys the delicate microflora balance. It gives the minority pathogen bacteria the upper hand; they no longer have competition from the non-pathogenic, ‘good’ bacteria to stop them. This means they return artificially quickly and constantly evolve to fight the biocides.

Fortunately, there is now a cost effective and natural solution: The Ingenious Air System reduces both infection-causing pathogens and the issues around anti-microbial resistance:

      –  High specification air purification (UVC light combined with photo-catalytic oxidation and high-level filtration) removes airborne disease-causing pathogens and particulates (viruses and bacteria, allergens and toxic pollutants) down to 0.3 micron.

       –  Surface purification coats and cleans hard and soft surfaces with healing, health-enhancing, natural micro-organisms (environmental probiotics). This prevents the return of pathogen bacteria, protects against bacterial infections and reduces the causes of odours.

Standard biocide cleaning agents are making the anti-microbial resistance problem worse. You can help by switching to health-enhancing probiotic cleaning products, including hand wash and floor cleaners. These are non-polluting and improve the microbial environmental balance.

Probiotic cleaning products are better at protecting surfaces from pathogen bacteria than biocide cleaning agents. They cut off the food supply and take away the space needed for pathogen bacteria to multiply and adapt. They are also proven to be healthier for cleaning operatives.
